Granite City, IL (May 24, 2024) icon Mechanical’s Service Department was recently awarded the 2024 Outstanding Mechanical Installation Award from the Mechanical Contractors Association of Eastern Missouri. The award recognizes the service department’s innovative and exemplary work in an extensive chiller replacement project at the PNC Building in Clayton, Missouri.

icon’s experience and innovative approach enabled the project to realize efficiencies in cost and schedule while increasing safety.

The Project

The initial bid request called for the demolition and replacement of (2) 500-ton centrifugal chillers located in the penthouse of the 18-story high-rise. The multi-purpose building is located within a business district and property managers anticipated the project entailing cranes and inconvenient street closures.

A Better Solution.

“We took a different approach,” said John Blaylock, Vice President of icon’s Service Department. “We begin every project with the end in mind and that’s how we approached this effort.”

icon engaged their in-house engineers who were able to determine that the best, most cost-effective and overall efficient option for replacing the (2) 500-ton chillers was with (11), 50-ton, multi-stack chiller modules. The solution provides true, N+1 system redundancy and offers a greater lifetime value.

No Cranes. No Street Closures.

icon’s experienced service crews identified the safest and less disruptive means for removing the old chillers was to dismantle the units into sections small enough to be removed from the building via the freight elevator. Subsequently, the new, smaller, multi-stacked chillers also fit on the freight elevators allowing for easier installation. icon’s innovative remove and replace solution eliminated the need for cranes and street closures — saving the owner substantial time and money.
