Ultium Cells – Electric Vehicle Battery Plant

Spring Hill, TN
Owner Ultium & LG
Architect Gresham-Smith
Construction Manager Barton Malow

icon Mechanical is proud to deliver mechanical systems and components for what is currently one of the largest projects in the U.S. — the $2.64 billion Ultium Cells electric vehicle battery plant in Spring Hill, TN. The 2.8 million square foot facility is a joint venture between GM and LG Energy Solutions and is scheduled for completion in late 2023. Once complete, the factory will produce batteries for GM’s nearby production plant.

The facility’s footprint spans about 22 Home Depots and the build involves about 2,000 construction workers and between 40 to 60 shipping containers of material and equipment arriving daily, according to a recent article in the Nashville Business Journal. “You’ll cover almost half-mile walking from one end of the building to the other”, the article states.

icon was awarded the largest work scope among all bid packages and will dedicate 69,000 man hours to the mega project.

icon’s scope includes the fabrication and install of over 870,000 pounds of clean room ductwork and entails HVAC equipment setting, supply, return, exhaust, and dehumidified air ductwork systems. icon responsibilities also include logistics, sequencing, and tracking of mechanical components. This translates into the fabrication, shipping, storage, and installation of about 5,600 pieces of rectangular ductwork, 4,200 pieces of round ductwork, and the installation of 240 pieces of HVAC equipment within a 9-month installation schedule.
